"One of the most popular events at the Nebraska
Outdoor Expo, held May 11th & 12th in Kearney, NE was Dr. Tom Osborn
teaching the basics of fly-fishing. About 500 fifth and sixth grade
students from throughout the State attended one of three sessions from
held Friday morning, May 11th. In addition to being the former coach of
the National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers and a former US Congressman
from the Third Congressional District, Dr. Osborn is a lifetime
fisherman and an expert fly-fisherman. Assisting Dr. Osborn with the
classes were two experienced fly-fishers from Nebraska Chapter #710 of
Trout Unlimited. TU #710 Secretary Gene Kathol and Board Member Mike
Sonderman, both also volunteer Certified Aquatic Education Instructors
with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, helped Dr. Tom teach the
kids the fine art of fly casting. Dr. Tom covered some basics of
fishing and some comparisons between spinning or casting and
fly-fishing, and how to tie a fly or hook to a line. The coach called
about 15 kids out of each class for some individual casting instruction
by Gene, Mike and himself. Most of the kids got the hang of it after
a few practice casts...at least they walked away knowing that most of
the casting takes place with the rod between 10 and 2!
Gene & Mike were joined by several TU #710 volunteers
who all helped with two or three other fishing related events at the
Expo. Joining Gene and Mike as Expo volunteers were also TU#710
President Bill Buskevicius and members Bob Johnston and Bob Kerby."
